Abstract
Gongronema latifolium (commonly known as utazi) is a perennial climbing shrub widely consumed in Nigeria and West Africa as both a vegetable and a medicinal plant. This study investigated the morphological and phytochemical properties of G. latifolium to provide a holistic profile of the plant. Morphological analysis involved macroscopic and microscopic examination of the leaves and stems, documenting diagnostic features such as an ovate leaf shape with a cordate base and reticulate venation. These features are consistent with taxonomic markers of the Apocynaceae family, thus supporting proper identification and differentiation from related species. Phytochemical screening of ethanol and other solvent extracts of this plant revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, steroids, and glycosides, with quantitative assays showing flavonoids and saponins in relatively high concentrations. These compounds are associated with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic properties, aligning with the plant’s traditional use in herbal medicine. The findings not only corroborate previous reports but also provide new insights by linking structural features with bioactive constituents, reinforcing the pharmacognostic importance of G. latifolium. The study concluded that the morphological and phytochemical evaluation of G. latifolium is essential for its authentication, quality control, and rational utilisation in drug development. It also highlights the need for further pharmacological and toxicological studies to standardise dosage and ensure safety in clinical applications.
